A Reflection on Sincerity and Balance
Dec 04, 2024“Rob, you are steadfastly honest and sincere. That’s not always pleasant, but it is appreciated. Don’t lose sight of your softer side.”
This note was written by Peter, a former employee and much appreciated colleague, about five years ago. When I first read it, I felt emotional—it struck a chord because it was spot on.
I remember reading Peter’s note and feeling a mix of pride and self-reflection. Was I really embodying this balance in my daily interactions? How could I carry this balance into my relationships and decisions?
Honesty and sincerity have always been important to me, even when it leads to some short-term friction. I care about doing what’s right, not just what’s easy. But Peter’s words reminded me of something deeper: the importance of balance—of being firm yet soft, straightforward but compassionate.
I kept this note not just as a memory, but as a guide. Every once in a while, I look at it. And each time, it brings me back to what matters most: staying true to myself, while also staying aware of the people around me.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of these things. But this little cart in the picture, along with Peter’s words, gives me the space to reflect: Am I still living up to this? Am I staying honest, sincere—and soft?
Peter’s note wasn’t just about me. It was about how I interact with others, how I contribute, and how I can keep growing. His words still hold me accountable to being the best version of myself.
What’s the one thing that keeps you on track?
