When I failed to practice what I preach - 4 actionable tips to inspire real growth without overwhelming anyone!

ensure ongoing personal & collaborative development leadership self-determination theory support growth! Dec 19, 2024

I remember this moment vividly: a conversation with a school leader where I enthusiastically laid out ideas about guiding students in their growth.

I was fired up, painting a vivid picture of transformation. But as I spoke, I noticed something.

He wasn’t with me.

Not because he disagreed—he even said he liked my ideas—but because I overwhelmed him.

And then it hit me like a freight train:

I was doing the exact thing I teach others NOT to do with students. I wasn’t meeting him where he was. I moved too fast, didn’t pause to understand his perspective, and left no space for dialogue.

That moment became a mirror, forcing me to confront a truth: the principles we use to guide students aren’t just for the classroom. They apply to adults, too.

The Core Insight
As leaders and entrepreneurs, we’re wired to push forward—to build, grow, and bring people into our vision. But real impact? That comes when we understand how people learn and grow.

⭐Lev Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development shows us that growth happens not in the extreme, but just beyond someone’s current capabilities. Challenge them, yes, but don’t overwhelm them.

I like to call it the stretch zone: a place people want to stretch into. When you offer them a chance that feels just within reach, they won’t hold themselves back—they’ll leap forward.

And let’s not forget the fuel for sustainable growth: self-determination

People grow when their intrinsic motivation is respected, which means aligning with these three pillars:

1-  Autonomy: The freedom to make decisions

2-  Relatedness: A sense of connection and belonging

3- Competence: The confidence that they can succeed

Give them room to decide, make them feel seen, and build their confidence. That’s the formula for real, lasting change.

What About You?
Whether you’re teaching students, leading a team, or working on yourself, growth is about alignment and intention. Over the years, I’ve learned a few practical strategies to make this process easier—for both you and the people you guide.

My 4 actionable tips to inspire real growth without overwhelming anyone are:

  1. Know Your Audience or Team!
Understand where they are in their journey. Be curious, ask questions, and listen actively.
Once you know what drives them, you can guide them effectively.
  2.  Deliver Small, Achievable Wins!
Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into bite-sized steps that lead to quick victories. Small successes build confidence and momentum.
  3. Create a Safe Space for Learning
Trust is the foundation of growth. Celebrate progress, embrace mistakes, and make it okay to try—and stumble—along the way.

  4. Never Stop Growing Yourself
Your personal growth sets the bar for your team’s potential. Reflect, seek challenges, and stretch yourself—your example is your strongest tool.
